Single vehicle rollover
Numerous emergency vehicles tended to the scene of a fatal single vehicle rollover on Oct. 21. The Strathmore RCMP arrived on scene at approximately 2 p.m. on Highway 1 near the intersection of Range Road 261. The car, going eastbound towards Strathmore, lost control and swerved into the south ditch where it rolled into an adjoining field. The 29-year-old driver and lone occupant of the vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene. The deceased was a woman from Calgary, and the family has decided to not release her name.
According to the RCMP alcohol or other intoxicants were not a factor in the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
Head-on collision claims two lives
Two persons lost their lives last week when a vehicle travelled eastbound in the westbound lanes of Highway 1, and caused a head-on collision. Both drivers were pronounced deceased at the scene just west of Chestermere near Rainbow Lane Road. Strathmore RCMP and EMS were at the scene and diverted all westbound traffic off the major roadway and through Chestermere. The collision occurred around 10:50 p.m. Nobody else was injured. The victims and lone occupants in the vehicles were a 27-year-old man from Chestermere and a 30-year-old man from Calgary. The names will not be released. The collision remains under investigation and all possible factors are being considered.
Officer-involved shooting
A 26-year-old Morley man is dead after an officer-involved shooting in Gleichen last Thursday. Family and friends are grieving the loss of Cavin Poucette who initially appeared to RCMP members as sleeping or unconscious when they encountered a vehicle parked facing the wrong direction on Haskayne Avenue in Gleichen. According to an RCMP press release, the members tried to rouse the man, which resulted in a confrontation and in one of the officers discharging his service pistol.
Poucette died at the scene.
At the time of the incident, Poucette was in possession of a homemade weapon resembling a shotgun-type firearm. An investigation is ongoing to determine whether the weapon was functional and played a role in the incident. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) continues its investigation and will release more information publicly once the investigation has been concluded.
