The Gleichen and District Community Association will be hosting a community drop in event on April 25 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Gleichen Community Hall.
This will be the start of a weekly event in Gleichen that focuses on getting members of the community together.
The first drop in event is a day to gather community members to discuss what they would like to do for activities and events throughout the following weeks. Snacks and refreshments will be provided.
A yearly membership with the association will cost $2, to help cover the cost of insurance. During the first drop in event there will also be a $2 fee, which may or may not be a cost for each drop in, depending on the first meeting.
“The idea stemmed from hearing community members saying there was nothing in the community. The closest place to do community activities is Strathmore,” said Eliza Anderson. “The idea has grown from there. We want to see what the community members want.”
Current scheduled activities include pool, shuffle board, darts, bingo, card games, jam sessions, baking, pottery painting, exercise programs and public speakers.
The association hopes to receive more feedback from community members on other ideas for programs and activities that could be scheduled.
“The benefits to the residents is to have a wide variety of activities within our community, meeting your neighbours and knowing what options are available,” said Anderson. “Our goal is just to get the community members actually involved in the community.”
