The United Way supports many programs in the Calgary area.
Susan Wright, spokesperson for the Strathmore chapter of United Way, said individuals stepped up in 2016 to raise a total of $41,097.43 through Calgary United Way, $8,500 through Strathmore McDonald’s United Way and $1,800 from the Town of Strathmore fundraiser.
Wright presented the figures to Strathmore town council at the March 1 council meeting. She said figures were reviewed at the January 2017 board meeting. At that time, the board agreed to recommend funding for the following charitable initiatives: Collective Cooking; Rural Calgary East Post-Partum; Strathmore Library; Growing Families; Hope Bridges; Accredited Support to the Community Healthy Families; Youth Club; Roots of Empathy; and Strathmore FCSS.
Volunteers sit on United Way boards and work on local fundraising campaigns. The local fundraising money is distributed back to their community. On March 1, Strathmore town council appointed Tammie Chisan to the Strathmore United Way board for a term ending October 2017.
Organizations in Strathmore can apply for funds by putting in an application in November. Successful applicants are chosen the following month.
