After placing second last in part one of the War of the West Strongman competition, local strongman Nolan Sauve managed to shake things up for part two, taking home second place. He went up against nine other competitors, all of whom were in heavier weight classes.
While he did not receive the winning prize, which was a pro-card, it does show what he can do when he puts his mind to it.
“I just kind of went into the event with the mentality of doing my best,” said Sauve. “I decided to hit my personal best, so I went to the event and did that and things turned out good.”
The War of the West is a two-part strongman competition in which participants vie for a chance to compete on the pro-circuit in Québec by receiving a pro-card. The first part of the strongman series took place on May 22, while part two happened in Calgary on June 11.
Part two consisted of five different events that showcased the competitors’ strength. Sauve participated in all of the events. There was a 500 pound arm-over-arm tire pull; a 500 pound squat for repetition; lifting a 340 pound atlas stone, which he managed to lift twice; a viking press that Sauve managed to get up to 310 pounds; and finally a dead lift where the weight was raised each time, with Sauve making it to 780 pounds, tying for first place.
Sauve would like to do another competition this summer and is on the lookout for one. He is also currently waiting to hear back on whether he has made it to the Alberta provincials for Strongman.
