Sixty-five players will have the opportunity to interact with current and former Strathmore Reds midget triple-A players at the 12th annual Strathmore Minor Baseball Association Winter Camp, providing them with a chance to learn and improve their skills in baseball.
“I think it’s a good introduction for a lot of them,” said head instructor Zane Anderson. “A lot of kids haven’t played baseball before. We really try to start off pretty basic and get a little more complex as the camp goes on. It’s good for the kids who aren’t playing hockey. We have a lot of hockey kids who make it out, which is nice to see.”
Anderson said that as the camp goes on the kids will build on skills such as catching the ball, throwing the ball, all the way up to hitting certain types of pitches, and depending on the age groups, the older kids will get into more complex techniques.
Anderson is going into his eighth year coaching the camp and seeing players that he has coached sharing their knowledge of baseball with the kids is gratifying in itself.
“The kids get a lot out of it,” said Anderson. “It’s one thing to tell them to do something, but it’s another thing to actually get them to teach a kid to do something. It’s funny a lot of the players have the same stuff they need to work on as the players in the camp. They can see it sort of from a different perspective which is really good for them.”
Above all else, Anderson hopes the kids will feel the love of baseball. He added that it’s a great stepping-stone for the players heading into the season.
The camp begins on Jan. 8 and will run once a week until Feb. 26. More information can be found at www.strathmorebaseball.com.
