The Strathmore High School Spartans were 52 seconds away from pulling out a win in a stadium that has haunted them the past few years.
Despite holding the lead for most of the fourth quarter, a late touchdown drive from the Medicine Hat Mohawks clipped the Spartans 18-14 in Rangeland Football Conference action Sept. 16 at the Methenex Bowl.
To say the Mohawks have owned the Spartans the last few years might be an understatement. The Mohawks have starched the Spartans 72-0, 42-14 and 26-0 since head coach Travis Gorski took over the program.
But, the most recent result might be the dawning of a new day in Spartan football.
“It was interesting to see their eyes light up once we took the lead in the fourth quarter. They know about our history down here and it hasn’t been great,” said Gorski. “It was awesome to see them get rewarded for their hard work.”
The Spartans (1-1) received both touchdowns from Isaac Wegner, who dove in from the one-yard line on quarterback sneaks.
Kevin Agboro was the leading receiver for the Spartans, snagging four passes and racking up 100 yards. Senior running back Austin Wasut churned out 80 and Chris Rebeyka chipped in with 50 rushing yards.
The Spartans needed to drive the field while down four with 52 seconds remaining against the seventh ranked Mohawks (2-0). A tough task regardless of the opponent, the game ended when Wegner was intercepted.
The Spartans now head to Brooks to take on the Buffalos on Sept. 23 at Brooks Composite High School field.
