Inspired by the success and local impact of a fundraising group in Edmonton, Chicks with Cheques, a local woman is mirroring the concept in Strathmore to network with other women and create inspiration to give back to the community financially.
Even though Marlene Risdon grew up in Strathmore and has commuted back and forth from Calgary for years to attend 4-H meetings and volunteer her time with the Cheadle Lions Club, she noticed the friendships and contacts she made in the town slowly wavered.
Therefore, when she heard about the Chicks with Cheques organization in Edmonton that brings women together in a creative way to donate money to local sport teams, charities, and non-profit organizations, Risdon felt the initiative could be beneficial for organizations in Strathmore and the Wheatland County area.
“It just sounded neat,” said Risdon. “I thought what a neat networking way. There’s just so many different organizations and clubs and charities that need money. Every bit is going to help.”
The local event, Cheques from Chicks, will follow the same guidelines, yet requires women to purchase a one-time $10 membership which will allow them voting rights when it comes to selecting one of three charities that are randomly chosen from a hat.
Each participant is also required to bring a $50 cheque and commit to a full year, which includes four events ($200 per year).
Charities and organizations may contact Risdon directly to be entered into the draw, while members will also have the chance to put forth those organizations they feel would benefit from the funds.
The event will take place at the Legends Restaurant in Strathmore from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on May 16. The restaurant will offer a pasta buffet for $15, and donation presentations and voting will begin at 7 p.m.
