Classic and custom car and truck fans can get their fill at shows in Strathmore and Rosebud this weekend.
On July 15 and 16, car buffs are invited to attend the Strathmore Fun Runners’ 23rd Annual Strathmore Show and Shine. Friday night is Cruise Night. The event opens around 6 p.m., when Second Avenue is closed off. The cruise itself starts around 8 p.m. and goes until 10 p.m., running down Second Avenue.
Glenn Freeland, a Fun Runners member, said Cruise Night usually features 75-100 vehicles.
The Show and Shine goes Saturday in Strathmore’s Kinsmen Park. Freeland said he expects to see 150 to 200 vehicles on display. Many vehicles have already been pre-registered, but Freeland said there’s lots of room for more vehicles, and they may also be registered the morning of the event. Registration starts at 9 a.m., and the show runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The awards are handed out at 4 p.m. The event also includes live entertainment, concessions and vendors, and prizes for the public.
The Town of Strathmore is a big help with making the Show and Shine possible, Freeland said. The town agrees to shut down Second Avenue on Friday night, and permit the club to use Kinsmen Park on Saturday. Freeland also said 30-35 local businesses also sponsor the event. On Sunday, July 17, car and truck fans can move down the road to the High Eagle RV Park in Rosebud. High Eagle hosts the 6th Annual Gearheads Custom Classic Car and Truck Show, where campground owner Ed Sonmor said he expects 40-70 cars to be on display.
Pre-registration is encouraged, Sonmor said, but vehicles may also be registered at the event. Registration starts at 12 noon, and the show is open from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Prizes will be given for the top entries.
Aaron Krabsen and the Cat Country Band will perform live music. “Corvette Dave” will serve his World Famous Prairie Burgers, Sonmor said. There are door prizes and 50 / 50 draws for guests. The event is sponsored by Harper Tire and Napa in Drumheller, and Fountain Tire in Drumheller and Airdrie.
Call Ed or Jeanne at 403-677-2577 for information or to pre-register for the Gearheads Show. Sonmor invites guests to visit the car show, then see the musical Tent Meeting at Rosebud Theatre or the Passion Play in Drumheller, on the same afternoon.
