Blast away winter chill for a cause

With the recent and unexpected snow storm/slush bowl, now is your chance to blast away that initial winter chill at the Blow Up Old Man Winter fundraising event Oct. 15 at the Strathmore Golf Club.
Jim Cammaert of The Fireworks Factory has teamed up with the golf course for the inaugural tournament to raise money to help get more kids golfing.
Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Audrey and Jim Cammaert Put A Kid On The Course Fund.
The foundation is set up to help get kids golfing, whether that is paying for a membership, club storage fees or coupons to the course restaurant.
“This will be a normal five-person scramble, expect there will be an explosion at the end,” said assistant professional Josh Witty.
Carl Spackler might have used explosions to hunt down a mischievous gopher in Caddyshack, but the golf club here will be using explosions to blast away Old Man Winter.
Set up in the lake, 100 yards out from the gold tees on hole No. 1, will be a target. Throughout the day, contestants can take their one free shot at the target. If golfers accurately hit the target, they advance to the semifinals. Golfers who miss the shot can buy their way back in and take another crack at it. The semifinals and finals will take place after the golf tournament.
A triggered explosion in the finals wins the golfer $1,000.
The target will be a four-foot round gong that is rigged to explode from the vibrations of a direct hit.
There are plenty of spots still available for entry. Contact the Strathmore Golf Club for more details.
