Despite the inclement weather, about 400 people competed in the annual Tri-Smore Triathlon on June 25.
The triathlon is a three-event race consisting of running, cycling and swimming, and is open to all ages.
Event organizers have received a number of positive responses about this year’s Tri-Smore, with some people already looking forward to next year’s event.
“It went really well,” said organizer Niki Johnson. “We had great numbers and a lot of people were just happy and excited even if the weather wasn’t hot. They had a good time running.”
Johnson has received a number of compliments on Facebook and over e-mail from competitors and observers on what a good race she and the other volunteers put on. Many praised the event for allowing children to take part in the distance designed for them.
While that means a lot more planning for the organizers to ensure safety, Johnson said kids having fun is part of what the Tri-Smore is all about.
Carmen Bradwell Briggs was one of the participants in the Tri-Smore. She has competed in the race twice alongside her children.
“I absolutely enjoyed the race,” she said. “The volunteers are just fantastic and everyone is so supportive. We really enjoy it.”
Johnson’s only complaint was the weather. Due to the wet conditions they were unable to put out the sound equipment, so they had no announcer or music. There were also worries there would not be enough volunteers on the day, but the worry was unfounded as many last-minute volunteers called to ask if they could take part.
Johnson said she enjoyed this year’s event and looks forward to another next year and hopes that the weather will be drier in the future.
