The Strathmore Spurs U12B soccer team is feeling good about themselves these days, as they are 7-0 on the season after thrashing West Hills United of Calgary 6-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Ranch.
Head Coach Mark Shorhen has seen a real bond amongst the players and has noticed it in the older players helping out the inexperienced ones.
“The guys have really come out of their shells, they’re really getting into the play more,” said Shorhen.
“The older guys have played really well with them, getting them involved in the plays.”
His focus as a coach for the group is to pick out flaws on the field and make sure the players correct their mistakes and work through them for the next time that they are on the pitch.
“That’s always how I’ve coached and they seem to listen,” said Shorhen.
“The new ones, the first couple of games, are kind of scared, until I explain to them that I’m a very loud coach. If they don’t hear my voice, they’ll understand their doing something good.”
Aside from being the U12 B’s coach, he is also the president of Strathmore Soccer and said the other teams had great years.
“They’ve all played pretty well, we’ve tiered them properly where they’ve needed to be,” said Shorhen
The association could use some more volunteers for next season, and could use more experience at the coaching position.
