A young man was brought to the Strathmore Hospital early Saturday morning, after an accidental stumble caused him to fall onto a paring knife, leaving him with life-threatening injuries.
The male, estimated to be approximately 18 years old, was carrying camping equipment up a flight of stairs from the Powwow in Siksika on Aug. 8, when he tripped and fell onto a knife. The blade pierced the individual near his heart and after ambulances brought him to the Strathmore Hospital, STARS Air Ambulance was dispatched at 5:48 a.m. and transported him to Calgary Foothills Hospital.
“It was bad the way it went down,” said Gleichen Staff Sgt. James McLaren. “That’s all it was, it was an accident. It was a little bit confusing when we first took statements, because it originally wasn’t reported to us, it came through EMS. Then we had to play catch up to get our investigation done. It’s a pretty thorough investigation that we’ve done.”
McLaren added that roughly a half-a-dozen stabbings occur in the area per month, but they usually resemble pokings and slashings. The incident is said to be non-criminal.
