Strathmore MMA fighter Justin Schmit was confident for his bout with Matt Krayco at Super Fighting League 42 on Aug. 15 at the Stampede Corral, but he came out on the wrong end of the tilt, tapped out under Krayco’s triangular leg lock.
The fight began with a leg kick by Krayco before Schmit pushed him up against the cage and wrestled the nine-year fighter down giving him jabs to the head.
However Krayco was able to gain control back and Schmit, who was warned about the triangle, was caught in that position, and Krayco came up with the victory.
Schmit praised his younger opponent for his compete level and finding ways to keep him off guard.
“I didn’t expect him to be as good off his back as he was,” said Schmit. “He was active and he worked hard. He was constantly working for stuff. Everything went according to plan. He’s a tough kid, and he’s fought a lot tougher guys than me in his career.”
He did mention that there were some strategies that were swirling in his head in the ring, but admitted that there’s improvement required concerning some techniques.
“We could’ve gotten back up, but I don’t have the confidence in my stand up right now and I don’t know why that is,” said Schmit. “I think it was coming off that knock-out loss two fights ago. There’s a whole number of things that I have to change with what’s going on.”
The positives that Schmit took out of this fight was that he stayed healthy, but said that he’d rather get busted up and win the fight.
This was his third dropped decision in a row, and he is now is pondering his future in the sport, as he would like to focus on developing kids in MMA and his business with APEX in Strathmore.
“I hate to make a decision on my career on an emotion,” said Schmit. “There are a lot of things I have to focus on with my business at the gym. We have some great kids that I want to spend some time with.”
He does not expect to be back in the ring any time soon.
