Several players hit the ice for the Wheatland Kings spring camp from April 28-30 at the Strathmore Family Centre.
Head coach Jeremy Blumes liked the pace and intensity of the players who are hoping to earn an invite to main camp next fall.
“We’re looking for guys with good character, high level of compete, good skillset as well as guys with a high hockey IQ,” said Blumes.
He made it clear that the returning players will have had to earn their roster spots.
“Based on the talent they saw around them, they should spend their summers getting prepared to compete for a roster spot,” said Blumes. “There’s no guarantees, as much as we liked our first season back, we’re not married to any one player and it’s going to be a competition when training camp opens to play on our team.”
He was impressed with the variety of players and skill sets that were brought to the table.
“I think there are a lot of different players that showed well and could be future Kings that make a difference in our line up,” said Blumes.
There were some positions that the coaching staff evaluated and would like to get more depth at for next season.
“In particular the centre ice position and smart puck moving defensemen,” he said. “We’re looking to get better everywhere, but those were the top of the shopping list”
Blumes plans to do a lot of recruiting for players at different events throughout western Canada this summer.
