Performer Jacob Moon is performing at the Hope Community Covenant Church March 14. This will be the singer-songwriter’s first time coming to Strathmore, and he’s excited to bring his eclectic style to the stage.
“I actually do this thing called live looping where I am able to kind of create more sounds than just the one that I’m playing live,” said Moon.
“I kind of layer sound on sound to create almost like an orchestra and so in that way I am able to kind of make people not miss the band too much, because I travel solo a lot.”
Moon is known for his original music but also for some of the covers he has done. His renditions of songs by Rush, Marillion and Gordon Lightfoot have opened up doors for him, including the opportunity to be the opening act for those artists.
“Back in the early days of jazz people were writing a lot of new material and then it sort of hit a point where it wasn’t as important to write new material, it was important what you were going to say with your own voice on the songs that people knew, recognized, or that were just great songs,” said Moon.
“So to me, I love to write songs and I do it all the time, but if I can kind of bring something cool to the stage with a song that some people know or that I just really think that I can arrange in a different way, then I love to do that because it really gives people a point of reference for where I’m at musically. It also joins me up with fans all over the world who are also fans of the bands I’m covering.”
This year marks the 20th anniversary of making music full time for Moon, who is planning Moon-Con back in Hamilton, Ont. this April.
“‘I love the endless quest that is music, just writing a song, writing a better song, becoming a better musician, it’s just something that I never stopped wanting to do, it never finishes,” said Moon.
“It’s one of those jobs where you can never get to the point where ‘oh I’m good enough, that’s fine, we’ll stop there,’ you always know that you just have so much further to go.”
The concert is being held at Hope Church on March 14 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at Kim’s CafĂ©, Marlin Travel, Assist Business Centre and Pro Water, and on the strathmorearts.com website. Students going to the Covenant High in Christ will be selling coffee, tea, and dessert items to help fund a trip to Tennessee in July for a youth conference.
