Going for the cup

Since the Wheatland Cup was established four years ago between the Strathmore Golf Club and the Muirfield Lake Golf Club, golfers have been competing in a Ryder Cup-style format to determine a winner of a two-day event that kicked off in Strathmore last weekend.
Strathmore Golf Club has been undefeated since the tournament’s creation, leading assistant pro Josh Witty to think they have a recipe to keep the winning streak going this year event.
“[It’s] just kind of a friendly rivalry back and forth for both clubs,” said Witty. “With the ladies and men’s teams and we just see who has the most points and then they win the Wheatland Cup.”
Witty added the club takes active golfers that have played in club tournaments throughout the year.
“It kind of just depends who’s available,” said Witty. “Some people are unable to make it. We just try to find some members that have played in quite a few of our tournaments and members that enjoy playing members at Muirfield.”
Having lost by a couple of points over the last couple of years, Justin Harwood and his team at Muirfield hope to end the losing streak and come up victorious.
“This year finally, our members stepped up and [we’ve] been able to field a full team,” said Harwood. “It’s going to be extremely competitive this year and we’re really hoping to pull one out.”
With the draw pool this year, Muirfield members should be able to keep it close on the scorecard.
“I’m confident in all of our members’ abilities,” said Harwood. “We didn’t want to leave anyone out. We don’t have a huge membership group, we don’t have the ability Strathmore does to pick and choose who they want to go out.”
Harwood mentioned that his team has a great mixture of players that include players who are going have to give strokes, those who will gain strokes and ones that will be playing straight up.
The event teed up on Aug. 14 at the Strathmore Golf Club before it concludes at the Muirfield Lake Golf Club on Aug. 21, where the winner will be crowned.
