From their attitude to their individual skill level, the Strathmore Chaos volleyball team made tremendous strides in their first season of play.
The relentless attitude on the court earned them fifth spot in the U14 Division 3 category of the 2015 Volleyball Canada Championships in Calgary from May 14-19, as the girls made a quarterfinals appearance.
After finishing the round robin at 3-3, the team made it to the Round of 16, and won that game. However, they would be defeated in the quarterfinal by Airdrie.
“The way at this level that it works is all the girls on your bench have to play in the first two sets to 15 points and there are no substitutions. There is a fair play rule, we have starters, but with all that said, everybody roles in and plays a part,” said Appleyard. “We have people that are serving specialists, people that are better in the front row and we try to introduce people in and out of the line-up. For me it’s about creating that experience and confidence going into the future for these girls, because what it did is solidified our club as merit, sustainability, and promise.”
As the first season has come to a close, the Strathmore Chaos left in their wake a successful campaign, sure to encourage Strathmore volleyball players in the future.
“We had four ladies that never touched a ball before and they were involved in playing against teams that have been together for two years and competing,” Appleyard said. “And they built and expected more and more of themselves as the season went on. That’s something that makes you smile.”
