The Strathmore Community Football Association has seen an upside to all the players that have attended spring camp, May 4-29.
The peewee’s assistant coach Greg Zaugg was impressed with the work ethic of his players.
“The boys are all out working hard and having some fun,” said Zaugg.
At the peewee level, basic knowledge of the game is the focus.
“Right now we’re working on footwork,” Zaugg said. “Kind of more team work than anything. That’s kind of the big thing for me, working with the boys.
“Hopefully we can teach them some skills that carry forth into the fall and get ready for when they start to play games.”
The drills that are being taught are going back to the basics and making kids aware of the common plays on the field.
“Right now we’re working on passing and receiving the ball to each other,” said Zaugg. “A lot of focusing in on how to run around and pay attention to the guy you’re up against.”
Sean Seafoot has seen an increased number of players showing up at camp for bantam.
“It’s good to see this many guys out; lots of new guys from peewee have come up,” Seafoot said. “Some of the guys from peewees are bringing new friends.”
He wants to ensure that his team has an exceptional conditioning level through this camp and carry it through to the season.
“This is pretty much conditioning for the season,” he added. “We’re going to keep on doing a little bit of conditioning after spring camp is over, probably Wednesdays and Saturdays. Just to keep the guys in shape.”
Senior coach Brad Middlemiss is optimistic for the upcoming season.
“We’ve got a lot of new faces this year coming out of Holy Cross that haven’t really played football before,” said Middlemiss. “We’re getting back to the basics and it’s going good. I’m quite pleased with the way things are going. We’re still a little on the light side – 10 kids signed up. Ultimately I would like to have 14 or 15, but 20 is always nice too.”
