Remembering Our Roots author John Godsman is putting together Volume 2 of his book, which is a compilation of the 54 articles he wrote in 2013-2014. On Feb. 4 he asked town council for a sponsorship donation of $500 to help offset the costs of producing the book, as they had done with Volume 1.
“Volume 2 is slightly different. The front cover will show the Strathmore elevator reflected in Kinsmen Lake. The new book will have colour photographs in it, other than that the format is basically the same,” said Godsman. Council approved the $500 sponsorship.
Both books will be available in the Strathmore Municipal Library and Volume 1 is already on display at the Glenbow Museum in Calgary. The new book is expected to be available on April 29, and will cost $45. Volume 1 is still available for $40. The extra $5 charge for the second edition is due to the colour photographs being used.
Freedom to Read
The Town of Strathmore has proclaimed the week of Feb. 22-28 as Freedom to Read week. The week is about promoting literacy, tolerance, knowledge and a love of reading among all Canadians. Each year the Strathmore Municipal Library creates a display of some of the banned books, and lists why they were banned in certain communities. Some of the books that have been challenged are classics like ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ and ‘The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.’
