With a seven-point lead for the majority of the first half, the Holy Cross Collegiate Hawks were riding high into the second half of their last game of the season against Foothills Composite on March 6.
“We just seemed to stop going to the basket, and they seemed to do a lot more in terms of going to the basket in the second half,” Hawks coach Tony Irving said.
The final was 66-46 for Foothills.
“They seemed to get a little worn out,” Irving said of his team. “They didn’t put out as much aggression as they should have. That’s what we were working on in the past week.”
The Hawks had also lost the finals in Foothills this past weekend in an exhibition tournament. The senior team from Drumheller took the edge slightly, 64-61.
Holy Cross finished in third place in league standings with a 3-3 record, tied with Strathcona Tweedsmuir. However, Strathcona had a positive point differential as opposed to the Hawks’ -24, thus dropping them just below.
“I think we could have done better. The focus next year will be to improve our placement in league,” Irving said. “But we’re looking forward to our draw for zones and working hard to win it.”
Zones begin on March 14 for the fourth-ranked Hawks in Strathcona Tweedsmuir; their first matchup is against fifth-ranked Acme, who they have yet to see on the court this season.
“We’ve heard that this isn’t their best program over the years, but they are a decent team,” Irving said. “We’re focusing on making our players more aggressive on offense and defense.”
