The Easter break is quickly approaching, which means many parents will be looking for things for their kids to do during the day. The Youth Club of Strathmore and Strathmore FCSS are offering a taste of some of the summer camps with the spring break day camp.
“It is kind of a segue into the summer camp, so each of the days is a theme we’re going to have in summer,” said Youth Club Program Director Shannon Zieman.
The first day, April 22, will be about local heroes. The RCMP and the fire department will be there to spend time with the kids, answer questions and complete some activities.
There will also be a survival day, which will be hosted by Brenda Holder of Mahikan Trails, the same group who organized the town’s CSI-themed spring break last year. Holder will be offering a condensed version this year, planning to fit everything into one day.
“A lot of the activity that day will be outside, pending weather,” said FCSS Coordinator Catherine Walsh.
There will also be a circus-themed day with details to be announced later, and finally a day focused on culture.
“Because it is just a day we’re going to focus on aboriginal culture. So we have some guest speakers coming in, they are going to do dancing and make fry bread and that kind of stuff,” said Zieman.
There is a partnership between FCSS and the Youth Club this year, which allows the two groups to coordinate and plan events like the spring break camp.
The camp is for kids ages 6 to 12, and runs from April 22 – 25, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost is $80 for the week for Youth Club members and $100 for non-members. Zieman said youth 13-years-old or older are welcome to come as volunteers, but they must pre-register. Last year the town had 33 children registered for the spring break activities. Space is limited so preregistration is encouraged. For more information, or to register, call 403-934-4918.
