Yoga instructor Kelly Montford offers children’s yoga classes out of her house that promote balance, flexibility, strength and body awareness.
The program also gives the groups a chance to improve their self-esteem and confidence as well as strengthen agility and endurance for athletic gain.
This will be the sixth year that Montford has taught the program.
“It’s me privately teaching this one. So I have the kids split up as best as I can, there is the Kindergarten to Grade 3 group, Grade 4-6, Grade 7-9 and an older group,” said Montford.
The groups for the sessions are smaller so the students can have one-on-one attention. The student limit is eight in her classes.
“I cap my classes so I don’t teach to large groups. First of all I don’t have space in my house but also so they do get that attention, so they do the poses right and I’m there to see they are doing it right,” said Montford. “We do lots of games with the two younger groups and the older group, so as much as it is yoga, it’s taught through a lot of games and it keeps it interesting.”
Montford wants the yoga classes to be fun and at the same time wants the students to move, be more flexible and to stay healthy.
Classes have already begun. The Grade 4-6 group will run on Mondays starting from Sept. 15 to Dec. 15. On Wednesdays, starting Sept. 17 and going to Dec. 17 the Grade 7/9 and the 10/12 group. Thursdays, starting Sept. 18 to Dec. 18, will be the Kindergarten to Grade 3.
