New Wheatland Warriors head coach Cody Brown did not think the offence would have produced goals this fast, but he got it this past weekend en route to a perfect 2-0 start.
The Warriors thumped Taber Golden Suns 10-2 on the road Sept. 19 and demolished the Olds Grizzlys 13-1 on Sept. 20 here in Strathmore.
Brown admits it was nice to see the wins, but knows there are still areas to improve on.
In Taber, the offence was led by Jayden Hendricks , Tarun Fizer and Jase Westgard who all had three-point games. Jordan Hansen, Tyler Cardomone, Justin Crnkovic, Hassan Akl and Majod Kaddoura rounded out the offence.
“We had a good start, we were really playing the body and moving the puck well for the first game they played together,” said Brown of his double-A bantam team. “There was lots of penalties but we responded well to just playing through it.
“We definitely weren’t hurting for offensive side of things, still (there) are some things we want the guys to touch on that we thought we were lacking a bit, but for the most part it was a decent effort,” said Brown.
The home opener on Sept. 20 had the same outcome as the previous night as the Warriors kept piling on the goals.
Fizer, Cardamone, Crnkovic, Kaddoura, Hassan Akl, Jayden Hendricks, Jared Farmer, Tanner Boutin and Mitch Desserre all found the back of the net against Olds.
“There’s nothing really much to say in a game like that with that many goals but there was definitely some good points to take out of it but some stuff we’ve seen that needs a little work,” said Brown. “We had a good offensive up side. Guys were moving the puck fairly well but definitely lacking some of the system stuff we’re trying to put into place, but guys were bearing down and putting it in the net.”
The focus of the players was there throughout the game versus Olds, but they have to forget these wins and get ready for the better teams.
“(It) was just more so just getting away with some things that we won’t get away with a better team per say,” said Brown.
The Warriors will be back on the ice next weekend on the road on Sept. 27 in the Crowsnest Pass at 6:45 p.m. They will take on the Cranbrook Hornets at 12:45 p.m. the following day.
