VAN VERDEGEM, Maria “Mary” Jacoba Louisa (nee. Bartelen)
January 2, 1929 – February 16, 2014
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Van Verdegem on February 16, 2014. She is survived by her loving husband, George; daughter Diana (Wyman) Jones; son Doug (Karen) Van Verdegem; grandchildren Chris Dugdale (Shannon), Kevin Dugdale, Steven St. Louis (Janelle), Jonathon Van Verdegem, and Krysta Van Verdegem; great-grandchildren Cassidy Dugdale, Braiden Dugdale, Megan Dugdale; siblings Viola (Gordon) Hilton, Helen Duft, and Clarence (Barbara) Bartelen. She was predeceased by her brothers Clarence Bartelen, and Anton Bartelen, sister Alice Schmaltz, great-granddaughter Destiny Dugdale, and her parents Joseph and Celina Bartelen. Mary was born in Strathmore, and married George Van Verdegem on November 21, 1950. They started farming together in the Strathmore area where they continued to live their entire lives. Their daughter Diana was born in 1952, and their son Douglas followed in 1955. Mary was a long-time member of the CWL, had a regular bridge club, and was an avid curler. She was very dedicated to her family, and enjoyed gardening and playing cards with friends.
