Coach Jerry Flaws and the Strathmore High School (SHS) girl’s rugby team added two more strong performances to their stellar season this past week – a 31-29 win over Holy Trinity Academy on May 15, and also a 45-0 victory over Drumheller Valley Secondary School on May 14.
“It was back and forth all game. They’d have the lead, then we’d have the lead,” Flaws said of Holy Trinity. “They were big and strong. So we were the faster team, but they were stronger – physical strength wise.”
Against Drumheller, Flaws said it was fairly even in the first half.
“Then we put everyone in their normal positions and we sort of ran away with it in the second,” he said.
The away win against Drumheller was the second time the SHS Spartans have shut out their opponent; they defeated Chestermere High School on May 9, 41-0.
The girls originally had planned to play their last season game against Highwood High School on May 21 at home, but the match has been moved to Calgary; the boys side will also play Highwood the same day. The winner of the girls match will determine who wins the league, as Strathmore and Highwood are the only teams remaining with perfect records.
Strathmore had lost in exhibition to Vulcan in April this year; however, conditions were very cold and snowy.
SHS has qualified for rugby zones taking place from May 30-31; depending on their performance, they can qualify for provincials from June 6-7.
“The girls are really excited,” Flaws said.
