The Terry Fox Run began 33 years ago, and to this day the run is as strong as ever.
Here in Strathmore plans are well on track for the annual run scheduled for Sept. 14.
Last year the event was nearly cancelled, but Raylene Sedley, who was new to Strathmore at the time, couldn’t bear to see that happen and took over the planning.
Sedley has since bought a house in Strathmore and plans to continue to organize the event well into the future.
“It’s just something that was close to my heart, and I didn’t want to see it go away. We were new here to Strathmore, we had just moved here last August … it was a good way to meet new people,” said Sedley.
She has the volunteers needed to ensure the success of the run, and is now looking for people to put lawn signs in their yards to promote it.
“Right now I am just looking for people to put signs up on their lawns, I don’t really need any volunteers right now, I think I have gotten all that taken care of just with family. It’s mainly just getting the lawn signs out and that usually happens that first week of September,” said Sedley.
The run will be held a little differently this year. Everything will be held at Gray Park and instead of the options being 5 km or 10 km, they will be 3.5 km, 7 km or 10.5 km. Anyone can participate in the Terry Fox run, whether you run, walk, bike or wheel along the path. Furry friends are also being invited to take part.
“We are going to have a couple of water stations set up with dog dishes as well so they can have a drink of water, and then there’s dog treats at the finish line for them,” said Sedley.
There’s no minimum pledge required, Seldey said participants can donate $1 or $100, it’s up to each individual. Pledge sheets are available at various locations in town Sobeys, Canadian Tire, Anytime Fitness, The Bank Athletic Club, Curves, Pet Planet, and Co-op.
Registration opens at 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 14 in the Gray Park parking lot. The opening ceremonies and warm up will begin at 10:30 a.m. and the run goes from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Anyone looking for more information can go to the Facebook page at Terry Fox Run 2014 – Strathmore & Area, or can e-mail Raylene Sedley at sedley9@shaw.ca.
