Teaching the fundamentals

The peewee Spartans football team is recruiting larger players with the hope of being stronger in time for the 2014 season.
This is the first year at the helm for Clinton Bean, who came from the Calgary Goldenhawks program where he was a co-offensive coordinator. The five years previous he coached the atom program in Chestermere.
In his opinion the team is young and will need to learn the fundamentals to be successful.
“We got a pretty young team, we have some older kids who have never played football before. So I am looking for them to have solid fundamentals and after that everything should take care of itself,” said Bean.
The registration camp was good starting point to evaluate the player’s strengths and weaknesses.
“So basically … for the next week we’re looking at getting everyone registered who wants to play football in Strathmore, as well as getting them all their equipment fitting and making sure it is good for the rest of the season,” said Bean.
The team overall was lacking size at the spring camp, so Bean decided to recruit from other associations in the community to see if he could bring in bigger players.
“We had a spring camp in May and I noticed that we were lacking a bit of size with the kids. It is always nice to have those bigger peewee kids,” said Bean
“So what I did is I went through a lot of the other programs in Strathmore like lacrosse and poached a few kids from there and bring them out and there are a few of them here today.”
Bean is looking forward to the opportunity to coach here in Strathmore. He lives in town and has two kids on the team, and thought coaching the team would be a great fit.
The peewee season will get underway on the road Sept. 13 in Cochrane.
