The Strathmore Figure Skating Club has a new look – and with that, hopefully some skaters can achieve their goals in competitions.
“I hopefully will get the kids to progress in their skating and set their goals and achieve them,” said new coach Rhett Myers.
“I’d like to see the girls achieve a new goal for every competition, something that’s attainable for each one and they all will be different. So we tailor-make a lot of the programs for the older girls for their each individual goals,” said Myers.
While in competition, the skaters have to have the utmost confidence in themselves, as well as having their coaches believing in them.
“When we’re training everyday, I’m just trying to get them to be able to skate with confidence, because if you have confidence skating everyday, you can achieve that at competitions,” said Myers.
He wants to see the skaters focus on becoming stronger in one area and work on getting better at it to become a well-rounded athlete.
“I want the girls to succeed at something, could be as small as just skating one foot or it could be as big as landing a new jump in a competition,” said Myers. “We have a wide range of skills here in Strathmore. Some of the older girls are going to try some new jumps and do spins in their program, and for some of the little ones it’ll be their first competition and they’ll go out there and try to have a good time.”
The club’s first competitions will begin in January.
