The Strathmore Regional Arts Collective (SRAC) officially kicked off their logo contest during the first annual arts and sounds in the park festival last September. After shifting through the submissions the decision was made to use Lynn Day’s logo. Day was awarded with two tickets to Rosebud Theatre for creating the winning design.
“I was trying to get sort of a little bit about all of the things that SRAC is going to be covering, it’s not going to be just two dimensional art, there’s also potters, dancers, musicians. I tried to get a little bit of everything covered,” said Day.
This was not the first logo Day has designed. She also created one for a women’s centre in Vancouver. She trained in commercial art Kwantlen College in Vancouver, now known as Kwantlen Polytechnic University.
Day became a member of SRAC just before the logo contest, after finding out about the group, their goals and intentions for the arts community in the area.
Originally Day’s design was in black and white, but she worked with both Brandy Hebbes, chair of SRAC and Wanda Reinholdt, secretary with SRAC, to add colour and modify the logo a bit. Reinholdt created the inspiring and meaningful colour combination.
“When playing with the colour for the SRAC logo, I looked at the most widely accepted meanings of colours. Then I tried different combinations of them. Blue is usually associated with peace and comfort. Green is for growth and inspiration. Yellow is for intelligence. Red is generally known as passion and adventure. I did not think that any of these colours were strong colours for us by meaning or by sight,” said Reinholdt.
“Then, I was reminded that orange is considered a social colour. Since we are collective – bringing groups of artists and individual artists together to support one another, orange fit very well. I chose a lighter orange so as to not to overwhelm. Then I tried colours with the orange to highlight the symbols of art in our logo. The purple worked the best as it means magic and creativity. And, as I thought about it, a sort of ‘magic’ does occur when we come together and create using our talents as artists. The final touch was to add some bits of white within the symbols to highlight them more clearly.”
The logo was sent to a professional for final touches after a May board meeting and is now ready to be launched the public. The logo will make its official debut in advertising for the upcoming Arts and Sounds in the Park Festival Sept. 26-27. SRAC will be hosting a free family concert in the evening of Sept. 26 in addition to the festival all day on Sept. 27. Applying for and being awarded a Government of Alberta Culture Days grant has made a bigger better Festival possible.
