The Strathmore High School Spartans golf team took part in the South Central Zone championship on Sept. 23 at River Spirit Golf Club in Cochrane.
The team tied for third overall, but fell in a playoff to Chestermere.
Strathmore Spartan Jayse Wilson qualified for provincials in the individual category with a round of 77. Provincials will take place at the same course on Sept. 29-30.
So far the team had competed in a tournament in Brooks and an exhibition tournament in Cochrane.
The Spartans have been a fairly strong team the last few years, but has seen a decrease in players coming out to try out.
“The last few years we had five or six golfers who have been really strong and there hasn’t been as many come out this year. We had 20 people try out and we have five boys and one girl,” said Wes Clark, Spartan golf coach.
The team ended up winning the exhibition tournament in Cochrane, but it was just a pre-competition for the zone tournament.
“We were in that tournament (Cochrane) for exhibition and even if they did win it, they don’t win anything,” said Clark.
In the Brooks tournament, the Spartans played their high school and defeated them in an 18-hole match.
“We competed against Brooks Composite and the team won that competition playing 18 holes,” said Clark.
One member of the team, Korbin Allan, has been one of the standouts as he is the player that is carries the team and has a two handicap.
According to Clark, Allan brings the full package and stays consistent throughout the round.
“He’s a pretty good golfer, consistent and has the full game; a good putter, chipper, drives the ball well, hits his irons well,” said Clark.
Allan is hoping to lead by example on the course with his play and help his teammates wherever he can before tournaments.
“It’s kind of hard to show leadership on the team when you’re not playing with your teammates on the course and I try to help the guys whenever I can,” said Allan.
“Well I don’t have a driving range at my course, I go up to the chipping and putting green a lot so I’d say that’s the strength of my game most of the time.”
