The Strathmore Spartans only really had one major mistake and that was on the first play of the game when they allowed the Lacombe Explosion to score a special teams touchdown.
It was all offence from there as the peewee Spartans scored 42 unanswered points to beat the Explosion 42-6.
“The success is that we worked as a team and I mean we had a little lapse at the start of the game with a touchdown, but the defense and the team tighten up,” said head coach Clinton Bean. “It feels really good, this is our first home game of the year and it feels really good to get a win.”
Lacombe was coming into the game as last year’s provincial champions and the Spartans knew it would not be easy, but they achieved their goal of a win.
“We had a goal for ourselves to put up 40 and we did it,” said Bean.
The defensive line created key plays when called upon and tightened up after the first play of the game.
“They played excellent, other than the very first play of the game. Other than that, they played unbelievable,” said Bean. “Everyone tightened up on the line and we have some guys on our team, they’re go getters, when that ball is out they’re going to get it.”
The offence was able to capitalize on the Explosions turnovers and was able to get contributions from the quarterback and running backs.
“The great thing about our team is that we have people that will step up,” said Bean. “The running backs, all three stepped up, and once we stopped fumbling the ball, everything was good.”
Bean would like to credit the success to his coaching staff for the help with play calls, as he would not have been able to do it by himself.
The next game for the Spartans is Saturday, Sept. 27 when they play host to Stettler at 11 a.m. in Strathmore.
Meanwhile, the bantam Spartans played their rescheduled game from Aug. 30 on Sept. 18 and were defeated 33-6 by Rocky Mountain House.
The Spartans were supposed to play on Saturday afternoon and their game got cancelled because the team they were supposed to play, Olds, folded. Their next home game is on Sept. 27 (1 p.m.) versus RV Rage.
One week after getting their first victory of the season, the Strathmore Spartans high school football team dropped their game to Medicine Hat 42-7. Their next game is on the road in Brooks on Sept. 26.
