The Strathmore Spartans high school football team was hoping for a different result in their opener against Medicine Hat High School, but ended up on the wrong end of a 62-10 defeat.
First-year coach Chuck Holloway admitted that execution was an issue needs to be worked on.
“We had a lot of missed assignments, not finishing our blocks and not executing,” said Holloway.
Even though the season just started, the team is looking for more communication on the field.
“We need more gelling and execution because we had blown a lot of assignments,” said Holloway.
Despite the loss, there were some bright spots to take away from the game.
“When we did execute with plays we took them off guard once we gained 20 yards here and there (but) then we had false starts, offsides and shot ourselves in the foot,” said Holloway.
It is difficult for players to stay focused in games that are not close in points but coach Holloway was able to keep them motivated by encouraging them with a recruiter being in the crowd.
“I actually called a timeout because we actually had a recruiter from Concordia and I told them before half that the guy was there to give them extra motivation,” said Holloway.
The seniors will re-group for next week. The team consists of a lot of Grade 10’s and they play pretty well but need to work hard against the bigger teams that have older players.
The senior Spartans will be back in action on Sept. 13 when they host McCoy at Strathmore High School at 2:30 p.m.
