The Holy Cross Collegiate senior Hawks volleyball teams both had strong showing as hosts of their tournaments on Oct. 24 – 25.
Senior girls coach Josh Jalbert was enthused with his team’s skill level in all their games en route to a third place finish because they lost to Three Hills in the semi-final.
“We played great defensively, we never let the ball hit the floor. The girls were always fighting,” said Jalbert.
The girls did miss some opportune times to capitalize with some simple errors but still showed resilency.
“We made mistakes on our attacks by hitting into the net or out of bounds,” said Jalbert.
Overall, the girls developed more of a bond amongst each other and showed what their capabilities are.
“Our team really gelled over the weekend, I think it was our strongest tournament yet. It was good to see the girls perform at the high level that I know they are capable of,” said Jalbert.
As for the boys, they just fell short of winning the tournament but were really a determined group and battled every game.
“The boys finished in second place, losing to Three Hills in the final. We won two out of three in round robin play, beating Brooks Composite in the quarterfinals, and then won a hard-fought, exciting three set game against Banff,” said coach John Reinhart.
The points were spread around the team and the hitting was very effective in the teams’ performance.
“The team’s hitting was spread throughout the lineup, (and) played better defence behind the block,” said Reinhart.
Reinhart added the short time in between sets gave teams the opportunity to come back.
“We sometimes have short times during the sets when level of play drops considerably, allowing teams to either come back or get a big lead. We needed to return to better play quicker,” said Reinhart
“The boys worked very hard and played better as a unit of six. We played a strong team game. (I am) very proud of the way the boys played this weekend and very thankful to the students that did score keeping and linesmen.”
