Shelf Genie, an innovative way of utilizing all the space in your cabinets, has made its way to Western Canada and is available to all Strathmore and area residents.
“I was looking into the kind of business I wanted to run for myself and I was looking at all different ones that were out there. I kind of had my own set of requirements and in amongst things as most important to me is to kind of do things in the way where I can look at myself in the mirror every morning and feel good about it,” said Greg Billson, who had spent 30 years as an IT tech.
A common problem almost every home owner or renter can relate to is having shelves that can’t be utilized 100 per cent, or ones where you have to get down on your hands and knees just to try and pull something out of it.
“Cabinets are typically designed to look really, really nice but they’re not necessarily designed to function really well and so normally the insides are maybe a bit bare,” said Billson.
Shelf Genie provides almost the best of both worlds because they can look nice on the outside but actually also function on the inside too.
It’s also less physically straining.
“The interesting thing is quite often they get more space rather than less,” said Billson. “The reason for that is when we kind of look in a typical pantry what you’re going to find is a whole pile of air that isn’t doing anything. The reason that air is there not doing anything is because you need to be able to reach in, you’ve got to have space for your hands to get in and out. You still can’t see what’s in there, but at least you can reach with your hands and pull things and put them back in again, and it gets kind of messy.”
ShelfGenie uses glide out shelving, which means things can be spaced just far enough apart that it can all fit with just the right amount of space in between because you don’t need space to put your hand in any more, you can just slide the drawer out.
Barb Fath, a Strathmore resident, and her husband moved into a home in the Ranch and found they had two blind corner cabinets that they were having problems using.
“My husband and I, we looked everywhere to figure out how we could put something in ourselves, and then we went to one of the home shows and met Greg and he just had the perfect solution for it,” said Fath.
