The JETS (Just Enjoy The Sport) basketball athletic camp is a place to display player’s talents of shooting, passing and learning more knowledge of the game from longtime camp head coach Pat Fule.
Fule thoroughly enjoys watching the young kids improve upon their skills over the week-long camp and being sociable on the court by interacting and making new friends with other participants
“We hope that we can teach the kids some structure and fundamentals in a fun setting where they feel safe and comfortable,” said Fule. “They (the players) are going to grow as their skills develop but they will also learn a few things about being a good person and a good sport.”
Fule designs the camp so the game can be taught through concepts and drills that teach sportsmanship and positive attitude is beneficial from a young age in sports.
“(In the camp), we try to stress good sportsmanship as we do not keep score and if you happen to lose a shooting game, (the players and I) talk about being a good winner as well as being a good loser,” said Fule.
The JETS camp has some very avid young athletes attend every year because the players enjoy shooting the basketball and Coach Fule’s on-court instruction. The triplet brothers of Josh, Matthew and Isaac Dirks have been attending the camp for the past four years.
“What I like about JETS is that we get to practice our shots and (when there are certain shooting games) and (they are) fun to learn and I like taking shots,” said Isaac Dirks. Isaac has liked basketball since he was introduced to the camp four years ago.
As for Matthew, he follows what Fule stresses about having fun while developing skills on the court.
“I love going to camp because you make new friends and learn stuff that you have not learned before,” said Matthew Dirks.
On Coach Fule, “I like that if you do good (on the skills) and even if we do bad he still rewards us,” said Dirks.
Being a basketball fan, the Raptors are Matthew’s favorite team.
The middle brother of the triplets, Joshua, likes the games the group plays other than the basketball ones.
“I like the treasure hunt and the basketball shooting and JETS (provides a really fun atmosphere),” said Joshua. He is also a soccer and baseball player.
As JETS basketball is wrapping up, the STARS volleyball camp will be taking place from Aug. 18-22. You can contact Pat Fule at 403-934-4599 to register.
