Inviting dads to the classroom

For almost 10 years Sacred Heart Academy (SHA) has been encouraging the dads within their school to come in and take part in Friday Fathers.
“It was first started by a dad at that time in our school. He started it as a way to encourage fathers to be able to spend some time in their child’s class,” said SHA Vice Principal Lauren Zulyniak.
“We send out the dates of the Friday’s we have available for the year and then the (fathers) are able to let us know when they would like to come in and spend Friday morning with their child’s class.
“Sometimes they help out with the regular activities in the classroom, some times they do special activities with the class depending on their interest.”
Zulyniak said some dads have gone into the school and taught their child’s class about carpentry, mechanics, or even sports. It depends on the dad’s job and background.
Zulyniak said sometimes the dad’s also help with facility tasks at the school, like blowing up balls, small indoor or outdoor tasks, or projects in the school. On average two to three dads will come to the school in a month.
Each year during Sacred Heart’s REV night in the fall all school activities and sign-up sheets are available. SHA is actively looking for a father who would like to take over spearheading Friday Fathers.
“We welcome all parents at any time into Sacred Heart Academy,” said Zulyniak.
