The second annual silent auction for the Strathmore Montessori program held at Chinook Credit Union wrapped up on June 13.
“The auction was a great success, we raised just over $2,000. We are so grateful to the Credit Union, all the generous companies and individuals that donated the items for auction and of course the community for their support,” said Jennifer Ginter, Montessori secretary.
This September will mark the 10th anniversary for the program, which is held at Wheatland Elementary School. The Kindergarten/Grade 1 and the Grade 2/3 classroom have specially designed manipulative materials to invite and engage students in learning activities.
A teacher who has been trained in the Montessori philosophy, which allows students to learn at their own individual pace, guides the students. The students learn by making discoveries with the materials, cultivating concentration, motivation, and self-discipline and create a love of learning.
The Strathmore Montessori Society is parent run, and a charitable organization. Because it is an alternative program within the Golden Hills School Division the program receives funding for teacher salaries, but not for the materials or the Montessori teacher training. The program runs Monday to Friday and will be back in September.
