The Strathmore curling club is offering a fun, affordable program for junior curlers ages 8-18. The season begins on Wednesday, Oct. 22 and runs until the end of February.
“We run them in two groups (with our) younger ones it’s just really a fun, modified introduction to curling. The older kids play in a league against each other but again it’s about fun and learning how to curl,” said Lynette Aschenbrenner, curling club coordinator.
When the youth come to the curling club they will be able to learn the fundamentals of the sport and how to enjoy playing it.
“So they’ll learn the fundamentals of curling like how to slide, sweep and some strategy. As the years progress if they keep coming, they get better and better,” said Aschenbrenner.
Curling has become an increasingly popular sport every year and the youth programs have been able to fill up their spots because of lots of interest.
“Yes, usually our older group every year is full. We take 32 curlers and our younger group is getting fuller and fuller too so it’s pretty popular with the kids,” said Aschenbrenner.
The Strathmore Curling Club also hosts bonspiels, giving the kids the chance to play against different clubs. The older curlers also participate in ones at other local clubs.
The times for the junior curlers are on Wednesdays starting on Oct.22 from 4:45 p.m. to 7:30.
The cost is $80 per child; for information contact Lynette Aschenbrenner at 403-934-5732 if you have any other questions about curling.
