Local football players Garrett Getto, Misi Varga, Koby Halloway and Chevy Winnipeg had memorable Summer Games experiences that the athletes will cherish for a long time.
The Zone 2 team that played in Airdrie went 1-2 in the tournament and fell short of winning a medal at the event. The opening game turned out to be a one-sided contest as the 30-0 win over Zone 7 indicated a strong effort. However, the second game had a different outcome as they were defeated 18-6 by Zone 6.
“It was very exciting and I was very surprised (to make the team),” said Gatto.
The experience playing alongside current and new teammates was a highlight that he will never forget.
“It was awesome playing with different kids (and regular teammates), Misi Vargas, Koby Halloway and Chevy Winnipeg,” said Gatto.
“The exciting part was playing the games against different teams that I did not know.”
Gatto just plays the sport he loves and that is football, and while in competition on the field he learned how to become a better defensive end.
Misi Vargas, like Getto, took in every moment he could at the games.
“I was pretty excited (to get the call) but also a little bit nervous and started feeling like ‘oh my gosh, I have to get ready’,” said Vargas.
“I got to see all the different sports that were there and I thought that was great because there were so many different types of athletes.”
Volleyball was his favorite alternative sport to watch at the games, and he is looking to get on a team next year. Vargas also takes a keen interest in track and field.
The Zone 2 team finished fourth place but felt it was a gold medal weekend in their hearts.
