Parents, grandparents and community members came out to hear the sounds of spring at Holy Cross Collegiate’s (HCC) 6 annual Fine Arts night, April 15, just before being let out for Easter break. An art gallery was displayed in the HCC gymnasium and featured visual artwork with different mediums from the Jr. and Sr. high students.
Mrs. Sarah Haughey, music teacher for all the different genres of music including band and African drumming, was pleased with their performances. Many of the pieces for the evening were new to the students as they had competed in festivals earlier this spring. While pleased with all the performances, Haughey was specifically impressed with the caliber of emotion and drama which came out of the high school band’s performance of Whale Warriors by Brian Balmages.
The crowd was entertained by band music, and African drumming from both the junior and senior high groups. The High School Drumline also performed two pieces called Palos Caliente by Chris Brooks and Aruban Jam by Ian Smith respectfully.
Halfway through the musical performances, the high school drama class, under the direction of Angela McLean and Elise Tanguay, gave a reverent performance of the Stations of the Cross.
Presently the Jr. and Sr. high bands are being diligent in practicing for their upcoming competitions at the Alberta Festival of the Bands on May 20 being held at Red Deer College.
