At the Nov. 19 council meeting a bylaw was passed to allow for Emotional Support Animals (ESA) within the town boundaries. On Dec. 3 an amendment to the fees bylaw was brought to council to create a licensing fee for ESA. The fee recommended is $25, which is the same as a dog license. Also included are a replacement for a lost tag fee $10, and impoundment fees at $40 per day. Council approved the amendment.
Economic development
Chief Administrative Officer Dwight Stanford spoke about some of the development happening in town. One of the biggest ones commercial-wise is the new Peavey Mart, located east of the new Calgary Co-op. They have taken out $3.8 million in permits.
Building permits so far this year are $15 million over last year, which is just over $35 million for the year and there are a few permits that haven’t been processed yet. Also currently in the works is the new four-storey facility next to the Hi-Ho Gas Station, which will feature a medical centre on the main floor, and three floors of residential.
BRBC support
A letter from the Bow River Basin Council (BRBC) was received with a request to the town for financial support. The town has received similar letters in the past but haven’t previously donated, despite being members. The BRBC has supported the cooperative stormwater management initiative in the past by applying, successfully, for the RBC Blue Water Grant to help fund thee water balance study. A typical range for donations is .15 cents to .70 cents per capita. Council agreed to make a donation of $1,852.80, which is .15 cents per capita.
Promoting Strathmore
Bailee Simonin, 21, was before council to inform them and the town about her intention to run in the Miss Universe Canada pageant in the spring of 2015. She was also asking for their financial support to help with some of the costs she will incur.
After determining that her request was done properly under the new donation policy guidelines, Councillor Denise Peterson made a motion to donate $500 to Simonin, which was approved.
