M&M Meat Shops are gearing up for their annual Crohn’s and colitis fundraising BBQ on May 10.  This year marks 25th year for the event, which raises funds across Canada to support research of the chronic diseases.
Out of the 480 M&M Meat Shops across Canada, last year Strathmore placed 15 in total dollars raised.
“We have very good people in Strathmore, they are very giving, helpful and kind, and whether or not they are touched by these diseases people are reaching out in small ways or big ways through giving cash or volunteering on the actual day of the BBQ,” said Brenda Impey, who co-owns the Strathmore and Chestermere locations with her husband Robin.
All of the funds raised go directly to the research, and over the past 25 year more than $23 million has been raised by M&M Meat Shops across the country.
Canada has one of the highest percentages of Crohn’s and colitis in the world, with more than a quarter of a million people affected. Crohn’s and colitis are lifelong diseases that result in pain, urgent bathroom visits, hospital stays, multiple surgeries, and in some cases those affected may require a colostomy bag.
The fundraising BBQ takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 10 in the parking lot in front of M&M Meat Shops, at the Ranch Market. For a minimum of a $3 donation people can get a hotdog or hamburger, a drink and a bag of chips.
“Often times what happens is people will hand over their cash and say just keep the change for the BBQ and it’s just evidence of the generosity of Strathmore again,” said Impey.
“It’s just reaching out to help those around us, but for the grace of God there go I, it’s kind of the attitude that people have, it’s just really cool.”
Impey said she and her husband are filled with appreciation for the support Strathmore has provided in the past and their ongoing efforts.
Volunteers are still needed. Anyone wishing to lend a hand can contact Brenda by calling 403-934-6913.
