The Strathmore Cubs are a group that is taught about their natural surroundings. The group got to experience that when they went on a tour of the Eagle Lake Nurseries on Sept. 27.
“So we’re here at Eagle Lake Nurseries to learn a little bit more about our environment and some of our local businesses that deal with environmental things such as growing trees,” said Allison Israels, Cubs Leader. “One of the key factors of being a Cub is knowing all about your environment because you play a factor whether it’s a positive one or a negative one.”
The visit to the nursery was all a bout how trees and plants play a role in the Cubs’ lives.
The leaders want to teach the kids how leave a piece of nature the way it is without disturbing its surroundings.
“We want to leave an area the way we left it,” said Israels. “So if you walked into a forest, you don’t want to be taking out stones, animals or any kind of object because we want to walk in, appreciate our environment and then walk and leave it for somebody else to enjoy.”
A normal Cubs meeting can be different each time as there are a wide variety of activities that occur.
“Our normal meetings are anywhere from games to skits, learning songs, doing art projects, environmental studies,” said Israels.
Cubs meet on Tuesday nights from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Quonset behind the Strathmore Civic Centre. The age for Cubs is for boys and girls ages 7-10.
