Each year Strathmore High School (SHS) awards one student with the Strathmore Times Class Act award. The student doesn’t have to have top marks to receive the award, they just need to be a classy, quality student.
This year Carter Jones was the student recognized with the Strathmore Times Class Act award.
“She is a class act kind of kid, she excelled at a number of areas and she’s certainly never in the office for the wrong reasons and she certainly represents the school and the community in a lot of different capacities and she just does it in a first class kind of fashion,” said SHS Associate Principal Kyle Larson.
“She is just a fabulous young lady who really came into her own in her Grade 12 year. She became a real leader.”
Jones has be en heavily involved in sports since coming to SHS. She has played on the rugby team, the volleyball team, basketball team, competed in track and field and cross-country running.
Jones said that sports provide a sort of relief. She doesn’t like sitting idle, and keeping busy and active has been a great way to fill her time.
Her basketball coach Dion Galandy was the one who spoke of Jones before the award was presented.
“I was kind of shocked because he has never really opened up like that, it was really humbling when he started crying especially,” said Jones.
“It made it that much more special because he has always been tough on us, and to just see him open up like that (was special).”
Jones will be attending Mount Royal University for nursing where she hopes to be involved in intramurals, and said she may try and sign up for their basketball team.
