Becoming future leaders

A recognition ceremony was held on June 20 at Wheatland Elementary for the students to recognize global and community organizations for their combined efforts to help with less fortunate kids in the Dominican Republic.
A project that was led by Joy Muenchrath’s Grade 3 students contributed by raising $670 between recycling pop cans and freezie sales, picking up 6,348 pieces of garbage and a large amount of donated clothes and school supplies.
The kids in the Dominican Republic will receive “school supplies, we bought a goat for a family through Free-the-Children and they will also get part of the $670,” said Muenchrath.
Programs such as these show that the students can be leaders of their schools, and if they put their minds to it, they will succeed.
“In Social Studies, we do Global Citizenship so it hits both (sides) and we are leaders of our school and we can make a difference,” said Muenchrath.
The project was designed to be student-led and provide them with the opportunity to create a name for their organization and make a portfolio.
“The students made brochures, letterheads and all have business cards, so it’s totally student directed,” said Muenchrath.
The students reached out to community organizations where they could donate. The associations that the Grade 3 worked with could not have been any more fortunate. “We had a global (organization), which was Free-the-Children and then our community which was the Wish Foundation and the Animal Control Centre,” said Muenchrath.
Global Citizenship is in the curriculum every year and the students engage in the course with excitement.
This is the fourth year that the program has been held at Wheatland Elementary.
