Carl Seafoot’s Strathmore Community Football Association (SCFA) bantam team has a new coaching staff for the 2014 season and admits that there will be a fair share of growing pains.
“It’s a whole new coaching staff and so that will be growing pains there. The bantams did graduate a bunch of players up to the senior team this year,” said Seafoot.
“I’m expecting there will be lots of opportunities for the junior guys to fill in lots of vacancies.”
The number of players who can make the team is wide open; there will be no cuts made because the numbers are too low for them to occur.
“We have never really run cuts. Our numbers have been up to where you’ve had to, if you had 40-45 players that’s lots but historically we’re usually in the mid-30’s,” said Seafoot.
Seafoot has coached for 14 years but has not worked with the bantams since the early 2000s. With the recent success with some of the players he hopes to keep that trend going.
With their opener looming on Aug.30 in Strathmore against Rocky Mountain House, Seafoot expects a hard-contested battle.
“I’m expecting a pretty hard-nosed game and it’s a matter of getting players out and into game mode.  We got to see what’s here and do what you can,” said Seafoot.
The team will not run anything fancy for the first couple of weeks while they work on basic plays and reps.
The bantam Spartans take on Rocky Mountain House at 1 p.m. on Aug. 30 at the Strathmore High School football field.
