Shantelle Gieck did not feel there were enough sporting activities for youth to play in Strathmore, so she felt obligated to start  #1 Hoops back in 2011.
Additionally, #1 Hoops, a basketball camp for youth, has just recently expanded into two programs. The first program is for kindergarten to Grade 3 and the other program is for Grades 4 to 7.
“The kindergarten to Grade 3 has been my newest addition to the program and the enrolment has been overwhelming,” said Gieck.
#1 Hoops basketball just completed their fourth season.
“I started the program back in 2011 in the fall and I played basketball since I was in Grade 4,” said Gieck. “I just loved the sport and wanted to share my love for (basketball) with the other kids.”
In many basketball programs, the main focus is scoring, which makes up a small portion of the game.
“That is what I really push for is the teamwork aspect of basketball and having respect for other (coaches, players, parents and referees) on the court,” said Gieck.
The credit goes to the coaches in #1 Hoops who have been incredible, along with the other volunteers which have been organizing the program.
Gieck’s ultimate goal would be run the program all-year round and in the summer have week-long summer camps.
“I have been getting a lot of calls throughout the year when my program will be running again and unfortunately I need to say I am unsure,” said Gieck.
