The #1 Hoops program is back and is currently accepting registration for its fourth season. Shantelle Gieck started the program. Basketball has given her a lot over the years. She has coached and played for almost 15 years, and so she wanted to give back to the community, and let the kids know that anyone can play the sport, no matter their skill level.
There are five coaches for each hour-and-a-half session and the program focuses a lot on one-on-one.
“All of my coaches have basketball backgrounds, I make sure to have that too. We have some unique things that other programs do not have,” said Gieck.
“I think we not only teach the basic skills of basketball but also the etiquette, rules, and teamwork is a big thing. (We) strive to show that each child that loves the game is allowed to play without limitations. There’s lots of game scenarios, and we also do lots of drills but fun drills.”
The registration deadline for the program is April 15. Gieck said they are currently looking to fill another 16 spots for Grade 4-7 session, and 21 spots are still open in the Kindergarten-to-Grade 3 session. #1 Hoops begins on May 6, and will be held each Tuesday night at the Crowther Memorial Junior High School gym. All of the participants are given reversible jerseys, a basketball and a water bottle. To find out more or to register, contact Shantelle Gieck at 403-660-3896.
