The Whispering Spirit Stables Equestrian Facility, just south of Strathmore in Namaka, boards horses and also teaches lessons – Western, English and Jumping. Their third annual horse show features all three horses, on Sept. 8.
“We have discovered that there aren’t a lot of shows that combine Western and English, and most of the shows are to the south and to the west of Calgary,” said Ruby Musselman, one of the co-owners of the stables. “The first year we had a fairly good turnout. Last year, our second year, it was incredible; there were 77 entries, really wide ranging. Lots of good responses from people saying, it’s so nice to see something on this side of the city.”
The deadline for entry was Sept. 3, before this article went to print, so it is unsure how many entries there will be this year. However, Musselman says, “I’m assuming we’ll have a fairly good turnout again. Generally they grow each year.”
Rosettes are awarded all the way to sixth place, along with prizes from sponsors such as Greenhawk and Lammle’s.
“It’s very entertaining,” said Musselman. “We bring in a really good judge and up the competition level.”
The jumping events lead the day beginning at 10 a.m.
“It’s a fabulous day,” Musselman said. “It’s a long day, everyone’s really tired by the end of it, but everyone has a really good time. Spectators are more than welcome; come on in, and enjoy all of the action.”
Free of charge, too.
