We haven’t forgotten High River

Aubrie Hunter, a Grade 6 student at Sacred Heart Academy, is getting ready for Advent with her fellow classmates. Advent starts on Dec.1 and Aubrie was worried that their sister school in High River would not have the items they need to celebrate the coming season because of the flood. The school raised over $2,000 to be donated to the High River schools, as well as collected clothes, bibles, rosaries, crosses and prayer cards with the help of Pastor Dawn and her Lutheran Church family.
“Our school always looks so beautiful, we have wreaths, nativity sets, Jesse trees, Christmas Trees and lights, what about the High River Schools? We can’t forget about them,” explains Hunter to her principal Paulette Chotowetz. Aubrie would like the entire community, which she is proud to be a part of, to help send Celebration items to Holy Spirit in High River. There is a donation box set up at Sacred Heart Academy where Advent items-specifically nativity sets, advent candles, tree ornaments and Christmas decorations-will happily be accepted. The season is fast approaching and the donations are needed before the end of the month.

Aubrie’s Wish
Most people I know have been affected by the 2013 floods one way or another, my grandparents Ron & Maeve Hunter live in High river. They had to come stay with us for a month.  When they could finally go back to High River and see the kind of shape their home was in, we all went to clean it up. For the most part my grandparents are really lucky, they lost everything in the basement but, they still have a home and can rebuild it. One of my Grandpa’s friends Brayan lost his home this week, it had to be ripped down. Brayan and his wife now live in the portable housing just out side of town. It makes me sad every day when I think of the devastation families are still dealing with in High River. I wanted to do something that could make people smile so I thought of Christmas decorations, I picked this because it is a time of year to celebrate our faith. I am hoping my School SHA and the Strathmore community will bring any extra Christmas Decoration they might have to our School by Dec. 5th so we can take them to Holy Spirit Academy. We want to collect these decorations as a gift from one school to another.
